What is…
Recognition of prior learning
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is the determination, on an individual basis, of the skills and knowledge obtained by the learner through previous training, work experience and/or life experience. RPL is used to determine the advanced standing, within a training program, that the learner may be awarded as a result.
Credit transfer
Credit Transfer (CT) is a process by which participants can seek recognition for a single unit of competence; a cluster of related units of competencies or an entire qualification.
Why choose RPL with Sureway
Save money
Achieve your qualification at a lower cost by gaining credit for your existing skills, reducing course fees.
Credit Recognition
Receive recognition for the units you’ve already completed, so you can focus your study on what’s new and relevant to your certification.
Save effort
Skip unnecessary coursework and assessments—simply provide evidence of your experience to get recognised.
Overview
Students must approach the Training Facilitator to receive guidance on how to apply for RPL or CT. If a learner is deemed suitable for RPL, a meeting with the Training Facilitator will be co-ordinated.
Only accredited assessors will conduct RPL assessments on behalf of Sureway Skills Training with assessments to comply with the requirements details in the curriculum and training product documentation. The assessment process shall provide for the recognition of prior learning regardless of where this has been acquired and is based on National Assessment Principles.
The student meets with a training facilitator to discuss the RPL process and agree on ways to gather evidence. Evidence is then submitted according to agreed timelines.
03
Decision and feedback
The facilitator assesses competency based on skills, knowledge, and prior experience, considering blended delivery and accelerated learning. The student receives feedback on the assessment outcome.
02
Assessment and review
The training facilitator reviews the submitted evidence and conducts an interview. A referee check is performed to verify the authenticity of the evidence.
04
Fair and transparent process
RPL assessments recognise competencies regardless of where or how they were acquired. Clear criteria for performance are provided, and learners can challenge the assessment through the Assessment Appeals Policy if needed.
Provide a validated transcript to Sureway Skills Training (SST) outlining the units you are applying for credit transfer (CT). This ensures that the units you have previously completed are considered for recognition.

02
Verification
SST will contact the issuing Registered Training Organisation (RTO) or the USI Office to confirm the validity of your transcript and ensure the units meet competency requirements. This step ensures that your prior training aligns with national standards.
03
Receive your outcome
Once the verification is complete, you will be notified of the result. If approved, your previously completed units will be credited, reducing the time and effort needed to complete your qualification.
National Recognition
Sureway Skills Training will, when presented with qualifications and/or statements of attainment of qualifications or part thereof completed at other Registered Training Organisations (RTO), recognise that these are part of the Australian Qualification Framework and will ensure these form part of the learners’ pathway to the qualification within the ASQA guidelines.
Fees
Sureway Skills Training fees for RPL are determined on the basis of each application. All RPL enquiries should be direct to the Training Facilitator. There is no charge for CTs.
